daddy’s girl {Photo A Day} l Southeastern MI boutique photographer l Kari Dawson

The idea of a Photo A Day would be to share an image taken the day that it’s shared, however today I want to share a little about my dad and he’s in Florida and I’m not so I can’t snap an image of him today so this oldie but goodie from last summer will have to do.
You may have seen the image of sweet Kelli I shared two days ago, who’s my parent’s pup they rescued from a shelter just after Christmas. I’m dog sitting although I’m pretty sure I’ll be fired. Kelli is beautiful inside and out, such a super sweet dog but curious like a little old lady. Long story short, she ran away today and for 2 ½ hours. I did meet an awesome couple though who take in strays and dogs without homes and foster them until the owners or new homes can be found that took time out of their day just to help me find Kelli. Minutes after I had an UGLY cry on the phone with my mom they called to say they had Kelli and were taking her to the house. Awesome people in Romeo!
Focus on the Family dedicated a few broadcasts this week to Dr. Dobson’s new book Bringing Up Girls. It’s a book I immediately decided I want my husband to read, having four daughters and all. I didn’t give much consideration to the decisions I’ve made in life and how they may have been motivated by my relationship with my dad. But after the dog was tucked safely back inside the house and I had my hair done I drove home alone and it occurred to me why the ugly cry I had today was so ugly. We’re talking hyperventilating, heart beating so hard I thought it might burst, can’t breathe or talk kinda ugly cry. It doesn’t matter how old a daughter is, she will never want to disappoint her father or quit seeking his approval. My dad has quickly become attached to Kelli and having to pass along the fact that I lost his dog while he’s on vacation was just crazy overwhelming.
I think I was too proud and independent a child to consider myself vulnerable enough to be called a daddy’s girl. My family had its trials as all families do but as a grown woman I can tell you I do now feel like a daddy’s girl. They say a girl will seek a husband to mimic her father so it’s no wonder I got so lucky. Todd and my dad share a lot of qualities. Hearts of gold, more loyal than any dog I’ve ever know, giving, kind, FUNNY. Oh my gosh, dad especially. I can’t tell you how many nights we’ve spent around a fire and he just kicks off one funny thing after another. I swear it’s as if he has a comedic writer trapped inside his brain. Todd isn’t as naïve as dad though who can be talked into anything by anyone; he just has soft spot for people.
So dads and daughters, it doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s never too late to find a ways to connect, to have long meaningful conversations, to build a bond, to feel like there’s a twinkle in that man’s eye that shines just for you.

kelli {Photo A Day} l Southeastern MI boutique photographer l Kari Dawson

This one’s for mom and dad. We’re house sitting their pooch while they’re away enjoying the cocktails, sunshine, and sand. Jealous much? Who me? Nah! They rescued Kelli a few days after Christmas. I remember my dad saying “hey we’re going to a shelter, do you want to go with us?” I thought he meant like a soup kitchen or something. Not that my parent’s aren’t wonderful people but delving out food to the homeless would totally be a first. So I stared at him the way Kelli now does when you make strange noises at her, stares straight on then cocks her head to the side in total confusion. Anyway, once dad clarified that they were looking to rescue a dog I was all on board. And, even though I had my eye on the Boston Terrier/Pug mix Kelli stole all our hearts immediately. She’s beautiful and wonderful. She is the biggest baby I’ve ever seen and needs more attention than any animal I’ve ever encountered. She loves to be loved and loves to sit on you like she’s a lap dog. She’s also very energetic and playful though when the time is appropriate, in other words, she’s perfect. Mom keeps trying to convince me to keep her, not that it would take much coaxing, but my dad would miss her too much. With me and all my kids gone now, he needs someone to talk to! So anyway, mom, dad, should you happen upon wi-fi while you vacation just wanted you to know Kelli is happy. She wants to know when she’ll be rescued from the circus but otherwise content.
